Scaffolding in Construction
Basic Functions and Uses of Scaffolding
Scaffolding primarily serves as support for high-altitude work in construction, ensuring that workers can safely complete wall finishing, equipment installation, masonry, and other tasks. Scaffolding is also widely used in advertising, municipal projects, transportation infrastructure, and mining.
In construction, scaffolding is essential for concrete pouring, brick wall masonry, decorative painting, and pipeline installation. It is a critical tool for construction progress, quality, and safety. Choosing the right type of scaffolding not only impacts construction safety and efficiency but also directly affects economic benefits.

- Tool-type scaffolding
Scaffolding Structure Components
1. Standards: Vertical load-bearing components that transfer the load from scaffold boards to the foundation.
2. Ledgers: Parallel to the wall, these connect standards and distribute the load, forming a supporting framework.
3. Transoms: Perpendicular to the wall, connecting inner and outer standards, directly bearing construction loads and ensuring scaffold stability.
4. Braces: Positioned at a 45°-60° angle from the ground on the outer standards, preventing longitudinal tilting and enhancing horizontal stability.
5. Cross Braces: Cross-braced on the outer side of scaffolding to prevent deformation, ensuring structural integrity.
6. Knee Braces: Installed on the scaffolding perimeter to enhance lateral stability, particularly useful during the initial and dismantling stages.
7. Wall Ties: Connect the scaffold to the building at horizontal and vertical points, supporting wind loads for stability.
8. Base Transoms: Horizontal rods close to the ground to reinforce the stability of the standard's base.
9. Scaffold Boards: Placed on transoms to provide a safe working platform for workers.
Importance of Scaffolding in Construction
Scaffolding is crucial in construction, not only affecting safety but also directly determining construction quality and progress. Key aspects of its importance include:
- Properly erected scaffolding provides reliable support for workers, reducing high-altitude risks and ensuring safe construction.
- The right scaffolding structure allows workers to perform tasks more easily, improving efficiency.
- Selecting suitable scaffolding types helps reduce costs while ensuring quality.
Applications of Scaffolding
- Advertising: For the installation and maintenance of billboards.
- Municipal Facilities: Used in bridge maintenance, streetlight installation, etc.
- Transportation Engineering: Provides a working platform for highway and bridge construction.
- Mining: Offers support for construction or equipment installation in mining operations.
